Chapter Six - Ring Around the Rosy

1.

“When do I get something for the hoo-haw itch, please? I’m on fire here.” Syanna's right leg held suspended in traction. Bolts still in place. She wasn’t able to get out of the bed to do anything for herself. IV in her hand and devices hooked to the ends of her fingers made movement even worse. She was on a morphine drip. Her right arm, healed from the hairline fracture, was in an inflatable cast. She had only her left hand, but they attached devices to the fingers to monitor for the drip, so even that she could not use properly.

“It’s the antibiotics,” the nurse responded.

“Got that. Not my first rodeo with all this. If I don’t get something soon, I’ll rip down this leg and get it myself.”

“Do you need the cream administered?”

“Oh, Lord. My torment is never-ending. Could it be by a cute male nurse? At least. And one that can pass for not being gay. Not that one from this morning’s shift. Get me a cute corpsman.” She reached for a plastic kidney bowl to throw.

But then remembered she needed the nurse for bedpan duty. She put the bowl down on the bed. “Fucking zombie apocalypse.” She shoved her head back into the pillow and groaned.

2.

G-Town woke early. Most people lived in makeshift tents. Chickens free ranged. They ran to get out of people’s way, in between scratching at the ground.

Brandon Pell relieved himself behind his tent, then followed the scent of coffee to a campfire. February, the mornings were chilly. People wore blankets or jackets.

“Hey!” Two kids came close to running into him. He recognized their blond heads as children belonging to a young sergeant, Holstedder. Their dad had amputated their mom’s arm when she was bitten. It seemed to work. She had cleared the hospital ship.

Sergeant Holstedder was the highest rank among them. He wasn't even thirty years old. G-Town was too young.

At the campfire, people passed around coffee and antibiotic cream. The latter was to treat self-inflicted burns on their UCMC-related tattoos. Pell had a scaring-over large burn on his forearm. He also applied some cream to his side, where he could feel a bullet lodged beneath the skin.

Plates of scrambled eggs passed around. The chickens provided eggs. Fresh eggs weren’t what most people were used to. Very rich compared to store-bought. But since most of the people had received a taste of starvation, there was little complained. Except for the Holstedder children. Pell estimated them at maybe eight and six. He’d have complained and whined at that age too.

The two blond children were the only little kids in the camp. Hard-eyed teenagers were the next youngest. Not Marines. They were orphans Marines had helped on the water and took them aboard their own boats. A bunch of them came from a pirate boat his flotilla attacked. The teens had been their slaves. Most had been raped. Suicides had already occurred since reaching the refugee island.

There were some adult civilians.
